Bethesda Baptist Church
158 Mercer Street, Jersey City, NJ

CitiStructure was retained by the Bethesda Baptist Church in Jersey City to provide construction management under a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) for the reconstruction of the church. The 113 year old historic church, located on Mercer Street in the city’s downtown historic district, was severely damaged in a three-alarm fire in November, 2007.

CitiStructure initially bid the 14,000sf, 4-level project as a general contractor in July of 2009. Most of the bids came in over $10 million, substantially over the $5 million - $6 million budget of the church. As a result, CitiStructure offered to value engineer the project down as far as possible to meet the church’s budget without compromising functionality. Some of the major areas of savings from the value engineering effort included:

  • Pile system to spread footings - $1 Million
  • Windows - $2 Million
  • HVAC - $400,000
  • Elevators - $300,000
  • Electrical - $400,000
  • Stairs/Railings - $400,000

Interior demolition was started during the Summer of 2010 with construction scheduled for the Fall.
